You are what you eat, digest and absorb. What you absorb includes what is absorbed through inhalation and the skin, which happens to be the largest organ of the body. When the liver is overworked, the skin takes over with the elimination of toxins. Unfortunately, many toxins are not that easy to eliminate.

Since WWII more than 80,000 synthetic chemicals have been invented. Most have been created from petroleum and coal tar for the purposes of chemical warfare. The sad thing is that hardly any of these substances have been tested for safety, but have been added to our food, water and cleaning products without our consent and most often without informing us of any dangers. There is a lot of intentional suppression in this industry that adds approximately 1000 new chemicals each year.

Chemicals in Common Cleaners & Personal Care Products

In 1989, a House subcommittee asked the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to analyze 2,983 chemicals used in personal care products, and 884 were found to be toxic. Of these, 778 can cause acute toxicity, 146 can cause tumors, 218 can cause reproductive complications, 314 can cause biological mutation, and 376 can cause skin and eye irritations. Cleaning products and personal care products should promote hygiene, health and beauty….. not make us sick.

Gradual Absorption

Although household cleaning products account for 5-10 million household poisonings each year--some resulting in accidental deaths in children--most poisonings happen slowly, over a long period of time by gradual skin absorption or by daily exposure to toxins we breathe in the air. In fact, the EPA Report to Congress on Indoor Air and the subcommittee hearings on the Indoor Air Quality Act stated that indoor air pollution is one of the nations most important environmental health problems. According to the EPA, most homes have airborne concentrations of hazardous chemicals that are 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors. In one five-year study, the EPA reported that a number of homes had chemical levels that were 70 times higher than outside.

Toxic Chemicals: "April/Spring Time Fresh" = TOXIC!

One reason chemical concentrations are so high in some homes is that cleaning products, personal care products, and other household goods release toxic vapors into the air when they are used — some even when they are being stored. The next time you walk down the cleaning products aisle in the supermarket, notice how strongly it smells of toxic chemicals, even though all the packages are tightly closed. We are told, through advertisements, that our home needs to smell like “April, Springtime, or Pine” in order to know it is clean. Actually, clean doesn’t have an odor….it’s just CLEAN!

Household toxins don’t just affect us; they create toxic waste in their manufacturing and use, which gets disposed of in the environment in the form of air and water pollution and solid toxic waste. Not only does this pollution come back to haunt our own health, but it also harms wildlife.

Imagine what your lifetime exposure is. Most people do their best to eat right, take their kids to the doctor for regular checkups, and try to stay healthy. Bottom line is, often times the things we cannot see are the most harmful to our health. Our children depend on us to make their homes safe, please try your best.

Why are babies and children more vulnerable?

Pound-for-pound, children breathe more air, drink more water, and eat more food than adults. Therefore, they are more exposed to air and water pollution and pesticides. Their bodies are more rapidly growing and developing, so chemicals that can harm development can do maximum damage at this critical time. It’s common nature for babies to put everything they can in their mouths making matters even more dangerous.

Often times it’s easy for us to overlook the many dangers that actually exist in many of our homes.

Our children live in a world vastly different from the one we grew up in even a generation ago.
